SI Rhyl and District Projects
Each Soroptimist International club identifies the needs of its community, then establishes specific projects to address these needs. All our projects relate to one or more of the six Programme Focus Areas: Economic and Social Development, Education, Environment, Health, Human Rights and the Status of Women, and International Goodwill and Understanding.
More information is available in the Our Work pages, where you can read more about the current Programme Focus aims and the Quadrennial Project, supported by all clubs in the Federation.
The projects listed below include some of the local and international issues we research and support in SI Rhyl and District:
Walk To New York
Project SIerra is a four year partnership between Soroptimist International and the charity, Hope and Homes. The aim is to raise £1m to transform the lives of some of the most deprived women and children in Sierra Leone.
The second poorest country in the world Sierra Leone celebrated it’s first year of peace in over a decade in 2003 and remains devastated by war and faces the challenge of reconstruction.
The messages of support that the project and its charitable objective have received has so inspired the organisers that they are going to continue the momentum for Project SIerra by walking to the United Nations with letters containing messages of Goodwill. To do this Rhyl Soroptimists are planning to Walk to New York
This apparent walk on water of the Soroptimists will be a sponsored walk from Trafalgar Square to Heathrow Airport, a plane to JFK Airport in New York, and then walk from the airport to the UN building in New York to present their messages to their UN Representative.
They have invited members from their Friendship Links in France, Sweden, Germany and South Africa to join in by organising walks of their own. They plan to meet with other Soroptimists in London and to be further joined by sister American Soroptimist groups at JFK Airport.
Soroptimist clubs will be asking schools to undertake sponsored walks in support of the quadrennial project to promote the theme of children helping children.
Although it is a Soroptimist project it is open to non-Soroptimists who are interested in joining and supporting this appeal. They should contact Imelda Jones on 01745 354151 or email Billandmeljones@aol.com for
sponsor forms for the “Walk 2 New York”.
