Welcome to SI Preston

Our President's Message

Sue Dixon President of SI Preston

It is an honour to represent and serve Soroptimist International of Preston in this our 70th Charter year. I am aware of the work and dedication undertaken over the years by the members of our club past and present.
A short history was complied some years ago by two of our former members Mrs.Jean Ward and Miss Joyce Gibson. I have extracted a little of this information.

OUR FIRST CHARTER YEAR.1939

The club was first Chartered on the 4th February 1939. The President was Miss Martley and in the first year we had 35 members.
Soroptimist International of Preston has a long history of service to Preston and further afield

In the first year S.I Preston supported Preston Women’s Citizen’s Association in their effort to get women police established. A woman Police Sergeant was later to become a member.
In 1939 a War Work account was opened and fund raising events such as garden parties and coffee mornings were under taken.
Preston Soroptimists provided 22 members to help serve free refreshments to service men and women at Preston Railway Station for the duration on the World War Two
A trunk of clothes was made available to people distressed by the war.
Outings were arranged for wounded soldiers from Whittingham hospital.
Parcels were sent to 120 of Preston’s poorest children aged 2 –5 years.
A Coach trip was arranged for 30 of the poorest mothers.
Parcels of clothes were sent to the Anglo Czechoslovak Fund and contacts in Paris and Holland.

SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY AND OVERSEAS

Our work of service continues. We helped to set up and still contribute substantially to the weekly running of the Child Contact Centre.
Our members have assisted the Parkingson Disease Society regularly for a number of years.
We provide necessary items to the Women’s Refuge.
