SI Peterborough Projects

Each Soroptimist International club identifies the needs of its community, then establishes specific projects to address these needs. All our projects relate to one or more of the six Programme Focus Areas: Economic and Social Development, Education, Environment, Health, Human Rights and the Status of Women, and International Goodwill and Understanding.

More information is available in the Our Work pages, where you can read more about the current Programme Focus aims and the Quadrennial Project, supported by all clubs in the Federation.

The projects listed below include some of the local and international issues we research and support in SI Peterborough:

Child sponsorship

This year we have started to sponsor a child through Plan UK. See our Links page for a contact address

She is a 9 year old called Luisa, who lives in the Dominican Republic. Each member was given a Smartie tube and asked to fill it, when empty, with 20p pieces (£15)

Aquabox

Launched by the Duke of Devonshire in 1992 Aquabox has dispatched 37,093 boxes to be filled by Clubs, schools, scouts, guides etc for sending to areas of need. The Aquabox contains water filter packs as well as items of humanitarian aid.

SI Peterborough has filled several boxes in recent years, our latest being sent to Sierra Leone and Ghana.

Timestop

A YMCA hostel for young people in Peterborough has been one of our projects for many years. We make starter packs of a towel, soap, flannel, tooth-brush and paste, razors etc - as many youngsters arrive at Timestop with only the clothes thay are wearing.

Shopmobility

Manning Shopmobility in Peterborough on Saturday mornings has been our main Service project for several years.

In 2004/5 this was our President's charity and the Club raised enough to buy a new motorised scooter. Now carrying the Soroptimist logo we have a ready advert around the shopping-centre.
