SI Newbury and District Projects

Each Soroptimist International club identifies the needs of its community, then establishes specific projects to address these needs. All our projects relate to one or more of the six Programme Focus Areas: Economic and Social Development, Education, Environment, Health, Human Rights and the Status of Women, and International Goodwill and Understanding.

More information is available in the Our Work pages, where you can read more about the current Programme Focus aims and the Quadrennial Project, supported by all clubs in the Federation.

The projects listed below include some of the local and international issues we research and support in SI Newbury and District:

50 projects in 2005 -2006

The Newbury Soroptimist Club was 50 years old in 2006. It was started in 1956 by Miss Ireland, Head of the then Newbury Girls’Grammar School.

We completed 50 local projects in a year including:

* Painting and decorating including the hair salon at Fair Close Day Care Centre
* Helping at The Princess Royal Trust for Carers barn dance and tea dance for carers
* Wash bags for the West Berkshire Womens Rescue
* Delivering Over 80s parcels
* Knitting a blanket for wheelchair bound patients in the local community hospital
* A number of donations to charities both local and national.

Painting at Fair Close

A club member with a pot of paint and a paintbrush

Our first Project 50 project was to paint the hair salon at the local day centre centre for the elderly where some of our members also work. Painting was carried out by members - and one husband - and the materials kindly paid for by one member.
