SI Midland Arden Projects

Each Soroptimist International club identifies the needs of its community, then establishes specific projects to address these needs. All our projects relate to one or more of the six Programme Focus Areas: Economic and Social Development, Education, Environment, Health, Human Rights and the Status of Women, and International Goodwill and Understanding.

More information is available in the Our Work pages, where you can read more about the current Programme Focus aims and the Quadrennial Project, supported by all clubs in the Federation.

The projects listed below include some of the local and international issues we research and support in SI Midland Arden:

Fresh Start

A project in Uganda which will fund a dormitory for 16 to 18 girls/young women at an addiction rehabilitation centre near Kampala - the first of its kind in Uganda and being developed by an English occupational therapist who has worked in Uganda for nearl

The centre, called Freshstart, at present only accepts young men, but a building for girls would mean that they could be accepted too. They will follow a 12 month programme (similar to Alcoholics Anonymous) plus training in skills such as sewing, cooking and animal husbandry so that when they re-enter society they will have the means to earn money and be self-sufficient. They will be accepted after a referral from hospitals, churches etc. They are often found living on the street and in desperate need.
The regional project which will run over 3 years aims to raise £15,000 to cover the cost of the building for the girls to live in while they undergo their rehabilitation and skills training. We will work with FOAG (Farmers Overseas Action Group) a UK charity already working on projects in Uganda.
