Welcome to SI Lewisham and South East London

Our President's Message

Welcome to SI Lewisham and South East London Club. The club has been operating for over 40 years with quite illustrious members taking it to great heights and helping many causes on the way. Although we are a small club, we are quite active within our local community.



Last year we decided to change the name to SI Lewisham and South East London to reflect the diversity of our members, some of whom located throughout the South East Boroughs. This has proven to be a good move as interest has soared throughout from interested parties living outside the confines of Lewisham.



SI Lewisham and South East London incorporate members from far and wide who set new roots within the South East Regions. In fact we could lay claims to forming a mini United Nations as our members originate from many corners of the globe.



The club works well with the local council and has been a member of the Lewisham Fair Trade steering group since its inception in 2005. Our programme action Officer makes networking within the Borough a priority.



We have always supported local and national charities and this year is no exception. I am supporting two charities. St Christopher’s, a local hospice founded by Dame Cecily Saunders in 1967. The Hospice has a worldwide reputation for its approach in the care of the dying.



Having spent a lifetime working in special needs field with people with mental and learning and physical disability, it is no surprise that my second charity is Handicap International, an organisation devoted to supporting victims of land mines throughout the world.



My aim this year is to put SI Lewisham and South East London on the map. Soroptimist International, a service organisation with no sectarian or political affiliation is unique in its approach in pushing the boundaries. Members throughout the world work tirelessly but successfully in highlighting and alleviating the wrongs inflicted on women and girls and supporting the vulnerable. Yet despite initiating and supporting many worthwhile projects, we seem, somehow, to hide behind the scenes.



We live in an environment of media glare and publicity and we need to become more visible to benefit our causes. At SI Lewisham and South East London, we are going to blow our own trumpet and shout about our good work and the good work of our pioneers who paved the way. In the words of our Federation President, We are going to:
