Our President's Message

In 2008 we shall be celebrating the 74th anniversary of Soroptimist International of Leicester and it is a privilege to be the Club President. I do not have a specific theme for the year as we plan to focus on all six programme areas. The Club will be continuing projects including:-

* Soroptimist Housing (Leicester) Limited, which owns 8 purpose built flats, the first of which was opened in 1959 and the charitable trust which gives small grants to aid independent living.
* Starter packs for residents of a support centre when they move into their own homes.
* Support for a Centre which helps the victims of rape.
* Fundraising for Rainbows Childrens Hospice.
* Support for The Anchor Club, a drop in centre for recovering alcoholics.
* Continued sponsorship for the education of two young girls one in Kenya and one in South Gujurat.
* Support for international projects which give women the opportunity to have better, safer, healthier lives enabling them to help themselves.

Each year the President has the privilege of choosing a charity to be the focus of fund-raising, and I have chosen STEPS a specialsit registered nursery for children with motor learning difficulties, that caters for children from birth to school age. Most children who attend have cerebral palsy, Downs syndrome or other similar condititions which make motor co-ordination difficult. STEPS is based in Shepshed and its Patron Rosemary Conley is coming to the Club in October to talk about this charity.

SIL works with other Soroptimist Clubs within the East Midlands Region and contributes to national & international issues through our federation SIGBI and plays an active role in decision making at all levels of society.

Our Club meets twice monthly - one business meeting alternating with a speaker meeting (which includes supper).
I look forward to the Club year as members work together, share friendship, enjoy social events and have fun.
