Welcome to SI Kettering
Our President's Message
Members,
My theme for the year is REFLECTION, RESPONSE, RENEWAL when together we will seek to learn more about what being a Soroptimist means. I’ve no intention of re-inventing the wheel, but neither do I feel that we should be complacent.
We start our year with Anne Brian – a past Federation President, now residing in our region. Anne is responsible for the Golden Jubilee Fellowship (something we hear about regularly, but few of us know much about) and she will be telling us of the activities of this Fellowship, and we end the year next April with Anne Dawson, Immediate Past Federation President who will talk on the International Dimension of our organisation and will describe some significant events in her year of office. We will also have talks from our then Region President Christine Fagan and Carol Strongman – Past President of Midland Chase will give a talk entitled ‘What Soroptimism means to me’.
We will have more lighthearted evenings-
June – Kevin McElhone will bring along some of his collection of Musical Boxes and Barrel Organs for an evening of Magical Mechanical Music. I am assured by those who have heard him that his talk is both entertaining and informative.
August – Blue Badge Walk around Oundle followed by a Ploughmans Supper at the Fox Inn, Thorpe Waterville.
November – Buffet Supper and Bees Wax Painting Demonstration.
A Friendships Evening when Chrissie Sherwood will talk about her Charity Injabulo. ( A range of craft products imported from South Africa - all made under Fair Trade policies and giving much needed work to projects and small businesses.)
(Hand Made, hand painted ceramic buttons and pieces. Hand Made Paper - made by a project supporting people with AIDS/HIV positive. Wirework by Sipho - quality products for a wide range of craft projects. We also stock 'Small Beauties' papercraft products - produced here in the UK these are a stunning range of Tea Bag Folding, Decoupage and Craft Card - very different and sure to add a wow to your cardmaking, scrapbooking projects.
We also sell authentic Zulu baskets and hand painted wallhangings.)
My charity for the year is Zak’s helping Hands. (A local charity based in Rushden)
The monies raised will support families with children near to the end of their life to receive palliative care within the love of their own homes and with the support of KGH Community Care Team.
The charity is also hoping to raise enough money to purchase, maintain and run a respite caravan at a site on the East Coast around the Wash. This will be a free service for families of children with a short life expectancy or recently bereaved of a child. This facility will offer accessibility, reassurance of medical assistance, comfort and relaxation for families to spend time together.
I hope that you will agree with me that this is a worthwhile cause.
We have 2 summer tea parties in members gardens –‘Wimbledon Ladies Day Strawberry Tea at Jill Dee’s and a Sunday afternoon Garden Party at Averils.
A Race Night in November
A Safari Supper in members homes
Musical Soiree ‘Songs for Helping hands in St P&P
I am not out to make mega bucks, but I do hope that we will look upon these times as an opportunity for fun and friendship and indeed service.
The heart of Soroptimism lies within the work and service we do through PA and throughout the year the PA Committee will have slots as illustrated by Eileen.
Now that it is here I am looking forward to the year. I am proud to be a Soroptimist and in particular a member of SI Kettering – a forward looking club and one that stands high within our region.
