Welcome to SI Durham

Our President's Message

Welcome to the website of the Soroptimist International Club of Durham. 2007/8 is a special year for the 40 members of SI Durham as we are celebrating 60 years of service for local, regional and international good causes. Our varied programme of meetings for the year (see Programme of Events) included an Anniversary Dinner in May 2007 in Lumley Castle Hotel as a fitting celebration for our 60th birthday.

If you live in the Durham area and are keen to help the local community, to make a difference to the wider global community, to make new friends and have fun, then SI Durham is the club for you. The President for the Club Year (which runs from April – March chooses a charity for which the club will concentrate its fundraising events as well as supporting selected regional, national and international projects. Our charity this year is the Grace House Children’s Hospice Appeal. Based in Sunderland, the purpose built, eight-bed hospice will provide a respite and terminal care for very sick children from across the North East in a home from home and support for their siblings and parents 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. At present the North East of England has the lowest number of hospice beds for children in the whole country. More details of how we are supporting Grace House and all our work can be found in the Our Projects pages.

We meet on the first and third Mondays of the month, currently at County Hall in Durham at 7.15pm to discuss and plan our involvement in local issues as well as regional national and international Soroptimist activities. Visitors are most welcome to any of these meetings, but especially to the Supper meeting on the third Monday which usually includes a speaker as well as a two course supper. Speakers and some social events have this year been linked to this year to the Presidential Charity, to my theme of Communication and other areas of activity.

If you would like to know more about our club or Soroptimism in general or come to a meeting, please complete the form in the Contact section.

Yours in friendship

Margaret Hickson
