Our President's Message

Welcome to the web pages of SI Chesterfield and District.

Our club is a very active one, doing service within the community and raising funds for charities and organisations.

In May 2007 we chose 'Learn for Life' as our theme for the next two years. We propose to support education , learning and training projects, locally and in developing countries, through fundraising and service - as well as educating ourselves and others about issues which impact on women’s lives.

At our monthly supper meetings we have heard from speakers including Derbyshire County Councillor Anne Western about the national 'Every Child Matters' strategy, and from Heather Furbert of 'Fair Play', a voluntary organisation which provides valuable play and social activites for children and young people with learning disabilties. As part of our ongoing campaign against violence towards women we have heard from Derbyshire Rape Crisis about their work. We also find time for more light hearted actvities such as a demonstration about Royal Crown Derby at our October meeting.

We are part of an international network of women's organisations and have formed friendship links with other SI Clubs: Anguilla, Darmstadt and Mannheim in Germany, Terni in Italy and Roxborough, Pennsylvania, USA.

Our membership is open to women of all ages who have background in the professions, management, public or voluntary service. We regularly hold welcome evenings for prospective new members at the home of membership officer, Anne Thompson. This is an opportunity to find out more about Soroptimism and to meet local members.
