Welcome to SI Chelmsford
Our President's Message
It's Good to Talk and even Better to Act
Having spent more than 40 years in the communications business as a journalist, editor and broadcaster, I am well aware that we all fall short sometimes when it comes to telling each other what we are doing and thinking. And this is despite the fact that technology has made contact easier than ever. This is a two way process. There are those who fix events and scribe away but may feel it's a waste of effort if we don't all read and act in a timely way.
So whether we have a defined role in SI Chelmsford this year or have finished a stint as a club officer or have recently joined and are chewing through the constitution, we all have a responsibility to contribute in the best way we can to Soroptimism.
Of course we all recognise there are different pulls on our time at different stages and this is when the tremendous friendship of Soroptimists can be so valuable.
The future direction of Soroptimism will be discussed at the world-wide conference in Glasgow this summer. As recruitment into all voluntary service organisations becomes harder in this country, that particular challenge is probably joint top with how to interest the rest of the world through the media in the work of Programme Action. We have a good story to tell locally and internationally. We're short on the dark arts of spin and turnout in big numbers. The Pink Bridge is our model.
It is said that we should concentrate on fewer causes for longer to build our reputation more consistently and for this reason I am delighted SI Chelmsford has agreed to make the Women's Refuge our main recipient for fund raising this year. We have supported their work over many years and Domestic Violence is one of the main planks of UKProgramme Action.
I am truly honoured to be your president this year and will be delighted to listen to ideas, observations or anything you want to say at any time. I appreciate, as I am sure you do, the work of club officers who make things happen in the spirit of actions speak as loud as words.
Margaret Hyde
