Welcome to SI Central Birmingham
Our President's Message
Welcome to the web pages for SI Central Birmingham.
Established in 1928, Central Birmingham is an extremely active Club with a current membership of 64. Members' professional activities are really diverse, ranging from Education to Accountancy, Librarianship to Company Directors.
Central Birmingham meets twice a month (the first and third Tuesday of the month) at Edgbaston Golf Club. Meetings start at 6.30 pm. The first meeting of the month is a Business Meeting, dealing with Club, Regional and International Business, including policy, resolutions for conferences, programme action and arrangements for events.
The second meeting is a Supper Meeting, with a Guest Speaker. Speakers this year include Robin Lefever (Director of the Promis Recovery Centre in Kent), Yvonne Chapman (Head Teacher of Harborne Primary School), and Gudjeet Bains (Editor of the English Section of The Sikh Times and Chair of the Institute of Asian Businesses). Each year, the President chooses a theme for the year. This year, my theme is 'Thinking Outside the Box', and I am sure that my chosen speakers will certainly get members doing just that.
In addition to the regular meetings, we organise a number of social and fund-raising events. This year, these include a BBQ, a Murder Mystery Evening, and a Golf Day. At the end of each President's Year, we hold a President's Weekend, when members are invited to join the outgoing President for a weekend at a venue of her choice. In the past, members have enjoyed visits to Scarborough, Bath and Jersey. For my year, I have chosen to go to the New Forest.
The Club's activities support a number of charities, including St Mary's Hospice, and VSO, together with the President's chosen charities, which this year are all concerned with young people disadvantages through illness, or through family or social circumstances: St Basils (which works in Birmingham with homeless young people aged 16 to 25); the Leukaemia Fund at the Birmingham Children's Hospital (which has been supported since 1988 by a club member, Joy Pinder, after a pupil in her school died of Neuroblastoma); and the Sithabile Child Care and Youth Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa (set up by a member of SI Johannesburg, which offers a permanent home to youngsters between 10 months and 20 years where they can reclaim their childhood, learn to play and look forward to a future with hope).
Further information on Sorotomist International generally, and Central Birmingham in particular, can be obtained from the Membership Secretary (see List of Officers). Prospective members are most welcome to come along to a couple of our meetings before committing themselves to membership.
