SI Burnley Links
Pendleside Hospice.
Burnley Soroptimists have supported Pendleside Hospice since the planning stages. Our longest serving club member, Miss Muriel Jobling MBE was the leading light for many years and is still closely involved. This year it is our President's main charity.
The Pendleside Hospice is a registered charity meeting the needs of people with cancer or life-threatening illnesses in the Burnley and Pendle area.
The purpose of a hospice is to improve the quality of life for its patients. This is achieved by medical and specialist nursing care, and the provision of social, emotional and spiritual support for the patient and their family and carers.
Care is given unconditionally and free of charge to adults who need it regardless of religious or cultural belief.
Friendship Link Club SI Berlin
One of our long-standing Friendship Links has been with SI Berlin. We have had several Friendship visits between the two clubs over the years. They came to our 60th Charter celebrations and in 2005, some members of SI Burnley were proud to be amongst the 300 clubsisters from 14 European countries to celebrate SI Berlin's 75th Anniversary.
Friendship Link Club SI Copenhagen
During our 60th Charter celebrations we signed the documents to become an official friendship link with SI Copenhagen. We have visited each other and look forward to welcoming SI member and Project 5-0 co-ordinator, Johanne Sørensen on a friendship visit to Burnley in August.
Burnley Soroptimists support Fair Trade
It is hoped that by Fair Trade fortnight in 2008, Burnley will have succeeded in becoming - or is soon to become - a Fair Trade town. The members of SI Burnley support the Fair Trade initiatives and will hold a Fair Trade evening at the club in early 2008.
Water Aid
SI Burnley supports the work of Water Aid and members of the programme action committee will hold a Wine into Water fund-raiser early next year to coincide with World Water Day.
SI Glendale, California
Through an email friendship between a member of SI Burnley and the Californian SI club, we were invited to decorate a bra for SI Glendale's "Bras for a Cause....goes to the Movies" fundraiser. Our union flag bra and the other memorabilia relating to the death of Diana, Princess of Wales and The Queen film raised a record $280. The Glendale club raised a staggering $45,000 with their event and we were proud to have been invited to be a part of it. See our News page for more information and a photograph of the event and visit SI Glendale's website to find out more about our new friends "across the pond".
Guest Speaker’s Charity Donation
Professor Carys Bannister OBE wishes to support Farm Friends with a donation for speaking to our club on July 3rd.
International Aid Trust
SI Burnley immediate past president Geraldine and sister Anne, the Programme Action convenor, are hosting a fund-raising Fair Trade Cheese and Wine Party in October to welcome Friendship Link visitors from Berlin. The International Aid Trust is the nominated charity of the North West
England and Isle of Man regional president June Gabbitas.
