Welcome to SI Burnley

Our President's Message

President Lynn 1a

I have been a member of SI Burnley since May 2000. After more than 30 years of teaching I am still as enthusiastic about education and the different ways in which young people learn as I was when I first entered the teaching profession. 10 years ago I stepped down from a senior management role at Hyde Clarendon sixth form college to join the Staff at Westholme School in Blackburn because I wanted to return to the classroom and concentrate on teaching rather than administration and I have not regretted that decision for one moment.

I am still teaching Mathematics at Westholme although I resigned from my examination officer responsibilities last August, knowing full well I would have difficulty trying to fit in teaching and examination administration with being President of SI Burnley. This was another decision that has occasioned not one scrap of regret!

I am hoping to continue supporting Pendleside Hospice as strongly as ever with a variety of events to be held throughout the year, which I hope will be supported and enjoyed by as many members as possible.

In addition to supporting the Hospice, and being ever mindful of the power of education and the transforming effect it can have on peoples’ lives, I am hoping to fund water and sanitation facilities at a school in Nigeria. This is specifically aimed at improving the access to education for girls (although the boys will benefit too) with the hope that young girls will no longer be deterred from attending school after the onset of puberty. The club is fortunate to have direct links with Nigeria through the good offices of one of its members, Marlies Oloyede and her husband.

I plan to publish a full programme of fund raising events in the very near future and it would be lovely if all members could bring these to the attention of their friends and families to help make this year as successful as President Barbara’s year has just been.

In my spare time (what’s left of it) I enjoy visiting my 3 children and 2 grandchildren and playing Bridge with my husband Paul where we regularly compete at tournament level. I am also learning how to play golf with the hope that when I do eventually retire from teaching I will have a new ready made busy life to look forward to.
