SI Blackburn Projects
Each Soroptimist International club identifies the needs of its community, then establishes specific projects to address these needs. All our projects relate to one or more of the six Programme Focus Areas: Economic and Social Development, Education, Environment, Health, Human Rights and the Status of Women, and International Goodwill and Understanding.
More information is available in the Our Work pages, where you can read more about the current Programme Focus aims and the Quadrennial Project, supported by all clubs in the Federation.
The projects listed below include some of the local and international issues we research and support in SI Blackburn:
Blackburn & District Talking Newspaper
SI Blackburn has been involved with Blackburn & District Talking Newspaper for a major part of its 30 year existence. The Club provides a team to read and copy just under 100 tapes for distribution.
Mentoring
Two of our members act as volunteers assisting children in their reading in local Primary Schools.
Awards
SI Blackburn awards two shields annually. The "Remarkable Pupil" Award goes to a Primary School pupil. A Service Award is presented to a pupil at a Secondary School.
Updates
Saturday of Service
SI Blackburn helped the British Trust for Conservation Volunteers to trim, prune, plant and clear an area of Witton Country Park in Blackburn. Snow had fallen, but that did not put the Soroptimists off.
Updates
On one of the sunniest days of the autumn, Soroptimists set to and cleared an overgrown area of the Butterfly Garden at Pleasington. The area will be planted with orchard trees at a later date.
SI President's Appeal - Project Punjab
Each year on 10th December - Human Rights Day - the President of Soroptimist International announces an Appeal. The current appeal is the "Project Punjab" campaign, helping girls into school in Punjab, Pakistan.
