SI Amber Valley Projects

Each Soroptimist International club identifies the needs of its community, then establishes specific projects to address these needs. All our projects relate to one or more of the six Programme Focus Areas: Economic and Social Development, Education, Environment, Health, Human Rights and the Status of Women, and International Goodwill and Understanding.

More information is available in the Our Work pages, where you can read more about the current Programme Focus aims and the Quadrennial Project, supported by all clubs in the Federation.

The projects listed below include some of the local and international issues we research and support in SI Amber Valley:

Derby School For the Deaf

This is our Presidents Charity for her year. Each year our President chooses a local charity as our main focus. Often, as in this case it is work that reaches far beyond the Amber Valley boundaries.

More information after our September meeting

Action On Ragwort

Ragwort is a very dangerous weed, fatal if ingested by horses, other livestock and humans.

Great care must be taken care when handling and disposing of ragwort. SI Amber Valley is currently in correspondence with the Derbyshire Highways Agency over the spread of the weed along the carriageways in and around Ripley
The branch is still looking for suggestions for a “Ragwort Pulling Party” during September 2007

Mobiles for Malawi

Our sister club in Kings Lynne has a member that spends half her working year as a volunteer nurse in a hospital in Malawi. When she returns to the UK we ask her what we can get ready for her to return with.

This time Maggie Orage asked for mobiles to be hung from the ceiling. They will be used to amuse and distract children during procedures in an area of the world where drugs are scares.
SI Amber Valley purchased 4 from a fair trade website

Licking Lassa Fever

We are working with other clubs to stem this awful disease that does not recognise state boundaries.

SI Amber Valley is collecting on behalf of the South Wales branches who are converting these discarded items into money for the programme “Licking Lassa Fever”. Pleases contact President Rachel if you can contribute.
